Proposal overview

In an effort to promote Harmony and effectively build partnerships in Africa, we would like to engage with local educators and citizens of Sierra Leone to establish a sustainable training curriculum for developers. In addition to technical skills, we would like to ensure our efforts build interest in Web3 broadly for all participants and the extended business community. This entails identifying key stakeholders and aligning mutually beneficial incentives to build and engage with the Harmony ecosystem.

Our vision is to spend 3 weeks on the ground in Spring 2022 (pending COVID restrictions) exploring partnerships with the nation’s most promising academic institutions (University of Makeni, IPAM, and other private universities). A panel will be held with the selected partners concluding the 3-week trip to announce who we’ll be working with. During the panel, we will include prominent African web3 project developers to speak.

We have established a trusted cohort of entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and policymakers with global perspective and operational expertise to ensure our efforts are executed efficiently and effectively including:

Team

Hindo Joseph Esq., Attorney, Head of Ground Operations

Hindo has strong ties to the appropriate policy stakeholders including David Moinina Sengeh and Mario Mackay– innovators we will be collaborating with to ensure successful execution.

Yeniva Sisay, Education Development Executive, Founder of EXCEL Education Solutions

Yeniva brings over two decades of experience across private and public sector work in the United States and Africa. S

Proposal ask

$100,000 USD

Justification

One Tr1be for Sierra Leone is seeking $100,000 USD to establish our public-private partnership with Sierra Leone. Our initial panel will kick-start the relationship and we envision fundraising from corporate stakeholders to help address some of the technical pieces such as devices.

Cost Price (USD)
Travel to Sierra Leone for US Team $25,000
Speaking Panel $15,000
Trainers + Staff $45,000
Venues & Courses $10,000
PR & content production $5000
TOTAL $100,000

Metrics for success

Our Milestones:

February 2022

  • Finalize budget and travel plans for trip to Sierra Leone
  • Build framework with academic institutions and local partners
  • Partner with Harmony to propose a curriculum and course work for Solidity bootcamp

March/April 2022

  • Travel to Sierra Leone for 1st visit and speaking panel
  • Capture content for media and promotional activities promoting our efforts on the ground
  • Launch bootcamp late spring/early summer with a target of 300 students. The course will last 3 months per session.

August 2022

  • We acknowledge that some students who join may not finish the course. A metric for success would be to have a 50% completion rate. Knowing this, we would showcase 150 developers through local media and international press. This could double as a graduation ceremony.
  • Begin job placement services, intern to hire programs

Fall 2022

  • Begin the fall season of courses in September 2022. Those that didn’t complete the initial summer course could reapply for the fall.
  • Up the number of expected students to 400

Winter 2022

  • We acknowledge that some students who join may not finish the course. A metric for success would be to have a 50% completion rate. Knowing this, we would showcase 200 developers through local media and international press. This could double as a graduation ceremony.
  • Begin job placement services, intern to hire programs

Metrics for Success

  • Educated 1000 Harmony Solidity developers in Sierra Leone by summer 2023
  • Graduation rate of 50% or more, 500 developers total by summer 2023
  • 2 functional resource hubs (24 hour computer labs) located outside of large metropolitan regions
  • 50 functional dApps built by Sierra Leone developers
  • 5 of the top aApps fully funded with grants from Harmony
  • Formal public-private partnership with quarterly updates (HarmonyONE for Sierra Leone Committee)
  • Quarterly review and audit

This proposal has been approved by the team. Congrats!

Greetings–

Per an injury and subsequent surgery to heal, we pushed back our timelines for rolling out the developer onboarding bootcamp until Princess Sarah can travel and participate in the local efforts on the ground in Sierra Leone. George Hughes was able to connect with Yeniva during a recent trip to the continent and we’ve made ample progress on the research and design front, now we’re ready to BUILD.

Moving forward, we’ll be providing a quarterly update on the progress and developments to date. Below are April, May, and June summaries with ask to transfer funding (ideally in USDC or T) for us to continue efforts planning and executing our mission to get 1000 developers from Sierra Leone to learn solidity!

Quarterly Update:

April 2022

  • George Hughes is scheduled to visit Sierra Leone in early May. Once there he will connect with those already on the ground to start setting partnerships in motion.
  • Engaged Yeniva on the ground in Sierra Leone. Her company EXCEL has created a list of universities to partner with as well as planned a pitch meeting with the MOBSSE for Unite As One Enterprises will present to the Harmony Project

May 2022

  • George Hughes travelled to Sierra Leone for 10 days

  • In addition to dialogues with government officials to introduce and discuss the grant/partnership-- he visited 3 universities (FBC, IPAM, and Unversity of Makeni) to get a scope of interest and infrastructure for a bootcamp.

June 2022

  • Formalizing biweekly cadence with Sierra Leone team lead by Yeniva
  • Exploring potential dates for launch (Fall 2022)
  • Developing a localized curriculum
  • Draft application for August open to review in September
  • Treasury management - in light of recent volatility in the markets, we will be operating using a stable coin (USDT or USDC)
  • Reassessing our budget to be as lean as possible

What is the best way to proceed for the transfer of funds?

Thanks!
