Barback DAO Grant/Investment | Gig-economy DAO

Name of DAO

[Barback Ltd]

Proposal overview

Barback is a freelancing, career-building and jobs platform for the hospitality industry, complete with a benefits package and a big social mission. Barback aims to become the first gig-economy DAO, where venues/employers and workers can vote on policy within the company that governs labour in the industry. We can create a digital democracy where top performers in each category (bar, restaurant, full-time worker, freelancer etc) become ambassadors for their group. Both sides of the market will elect a leader for venues/workers annually whose job it is to advocate for their side of the industry (policy changes/app changes/industry improvements). These elected presidents will be mediating between the company and the top-performers.

Our mission is to empower venues and employees alike. We go beyond being a normal gig-economy company. Employers and Customers review workers, where they also earn badges/accolades while building a vetted/verified meta-CV, empowering them to demonstrate their skill and their worth. Through our platform we aim to reallocate labour in a more Pareto-efficient manner, where employees choose to work somewhere they are happier, more productive and valued. Likewise it allows for venues/employers to find the right talent for them and their team, truly setting a new standard of labour in hospitality.

In addition, all members will have the ability to put forward surveys/polls/proposals which all users will then vote on with their tokens that they receive through working/hiring.

In addition, it’s our long-term goal to create Barback subsidiaries in each country that we operate in, where we will only raise from the stakeholders themselves. For example, a freelancer or venue will purchase a set of shares, where they then get a free year’s subscription, giving them another mode to vote through equity in the company that governs labour/the industry. If we can accomplish this we can create a true digital democracy by the people, for the people.

The app is currently in production, with an MVP being released end of March. Our long-term goal has always been to put Barback on a blockchain to incorporate digital democracy within a distributed system that rewards stakeholders at all levels. With the right funding (and more importantly, the right expertise!) we can accomplish this a lot sooner, and really become the world’s first gig-economy DAO.
We currently have over 120 venues signed up, and over 300 employees/freelancers signed up. We aim to acquire 2000 active users by end of April (as long as launch goes well!)
Overall, we require a minimum of ÂŁ250k to launch in full fashion, we have raised ÂŁ24k so far, with ÂŁ60k more soft-circled.
To date, we have over 120 venues and 300 workers signed up; we’ve created a universal industry discount card for all members; we’ve begun signing partners for meaningful benefits (finance and tax, meal replacements, banking, beverage platforms etc) and are in talks to get discounts for therapy, mental wellbeing and financial wellbeing platforms. We also have a great team of advisors, including a global director at Aldi in Digital Agile Methods, 2 crypto asset management founders and an advisory CTO whose the CEO of Hatless Studios (equally disruptively minded as ourselves!)

We have 2 active investor advisors, who created Fianchetto, one of whom is currently working on a decentralised platform. We want a community who can really help provide insights and advice with regards to tokenomics, token modelling and governance structure.

Hello, @RealEwanMoran! As a service industry worker I can appreciate this very much.

I would like to encourage you to visit our DAO Funding Guidelines page and review how we evaluate and fund DAOs.

We break our DAO funding into - at minimum - three “tranches”; Bootstrap, Operational, Expansion. You can read more about it on the guidelines.

For the Bootstrap Grant, The minimal requirements for are:

  1. Mandates: 3 mandates. Specific. Precise. Each mandate to have two sub-clauses to provide further clarification on these mandates. All three mandates and their sub-clauses should fit within a tweet.

    1. EXAMPLES:

      Developer DAO:
      Support -
Resolve daily issues on forums & channels, drive weekly meeting agenda
Bounties - Prioritize bugs & features with task management & contributor retention
Advocacy - Hold workshops & events, content marketing with talks & blogs

      Basic DAO:
      Timesheets -
Help contributors track work hours & deliverables in public
Payroll - Setup paid challenges, wallets, streaming payments & taxes
Reviews - Follow up performance feedback for bonus or penalty, rage quits, or kicks.

  2. Deliverables: Looking forward for the next 3 months only, identify key deliverables directly tied to the mandates of your DAO that you will be focused on accomplishing. Be specific. Chart, in steps, how you will get from where you start to delivering your goal.

  3. Metrics: Quantifiable and verifiable. List the “stretch goal” metrics that you and your DAO will be using to measure your impact in furthering your mandate. Low bars of success indicate a certain level of disengagement, while high bars and stretch goals indicate confidence in yourself and your community to accomplish that about which you are passionate.

  4. Governors: List the 9 governors that will start your DAO. NOTE: As we have said in the DAO Funding Guidelines (Guidelines for Harmony Grants) being a governor is not about having a part-time job. Think about your three mandates and try to find passionate individuals that have the skillset and expertise to help you accomplish those goals.

  5. Gnosis Safe Multisig Wallet: Establish a multisig wallet that requires 5 out of the 9 governors to approve the disbursement of funds.

  6. Schedule the Next Election: DAOs are not kingdoms. The initial governors do not rule by divine right, nor are they supposed to be “Governors-for-Life”. DAOism is about community. About passionate participation in projects. It is vital that we have a regular rotation of community members experiencing the responsibility of managing the DAOs treasury.

Please note that we are currently revising the Harmony DAO Bootstrap program. We believe that a “Minimally Viable DAO” is one that has accomplished, at least, the following three items:

  1. Established a multisig wall with a 5 out of 9 signature requirement.
  2. Held an election for those 9 signatories that includes at least 12 candidates and over 100 voters.
  3. Has issued an “Membership Token” of some sort (a DAO NFT, for example)

I look forward to seeing where your project goes and if you have any questions please ask!

following up here, @RealEwanMoran

Please let me know if you have any questions about the process.

Due to the lack of activity on this thread I’m going to deny this proposal without prejudice and close the thread.

@RealEwanMoran please feel free to post a new proposal following the DAO Funding Guidelines at your convenience.

Thank you for your time and interest.
