HollywoodDAO - changing the Hollywood financing game with a platform to crowdfund movies

Name of Project

HollywoodDAO

Proposal overview

Intro

There is untapped potential in every fan of TV, Film, Animation, and Games. Now, fans can work directly with their favorite creators to help bring the best art to life, whether a film, television series, or video game. HollywoodDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization that is powering Next Hollywood, a web3 platform that empowers filmmakers and creators with access to smart contracts, chain of title, and tokens of intellectual property ownership — and ultimately distribution of content and rewards.

With collectibles, fans are now not only a fan but also an owner with lifetime value in a unique collectible with direct access to project and film creators. They are activated as the greatest form of marketing and distribution — someone who literally is part of the creation of this art. And now the creator, fan, and community are aligned.

For IP creators, by maintaining ownership of their IP (film, TV shows, animation property, game), creators can create consumer products, license to theme parks, interactive games, digital collectibles, et al. They retain enterprise value. And the distributions are all written into the blockchain and distributed according to the smart contracts.

Imagine a studio as a pure financier. Providing the capital to make the content creators’ ideas become reality without the top-down mandates and frustrating creative meddling. Normally, these businesses have to be “all in” or not at all. Meaning, they either buy and produce the entire film/show — or nothing. Next Hollywood allows them to be fractional investors now — and creators to maintain control.

The Problem

Financing Hollywood is hard, and execs are challenged to make good content decisions (e.g. Squid Game rejected for 10 years, then greenlit to become one of the biggest shows in history). This is why so many films & television shows are based on existing and popular podcasts, books, or reboots.

Intellectual Property (IP) ownership is foundational to Hollywood. Certain musicians, filmmakers, and television creators make $100m per year for rights to their IP. But it’s difficult (often litigious) to verify the chain of title/rights.

Filmmakers and showrunners depend on the SVOD (streaming video on demand, like Netflix) system to create demand, so they don’t get to keep their IP.

Also, user experience for current Web3 is… challenging. For 97% of people: setting up a wallet, linking an address, paying gas fees, minting an NFT are not intuitive. Just as retail options trading was complex prior to Robinhood, there’s a UX challenge for web3 adoption.

Crypto is, by design, borderless and permissionless. Traditional Hollywood financing is, by design, centralized and regional. International customers frequently resort to piracy because they have no legal means to access content.

There is little to no transparency with streamers on their profits or viewership data (whereas in traditional theatrical releases the industry is privy to the data: from studios to managers, talent to filmmakers, et al.). Recently leaked data demonstrates that a global hit show generated 45x in value to cost, data streamers go to great lengths to hide from creators.

The Solution

First, the Next Hollywood platform: It allows anyone to finance their film, tv, and video game productions. Easy to search, browse, and buy NFTs; easy-to-use social + discord-style community features; ability to showcase collectibles with one-click push to profile picture on other social platforms.

Second, a Hollywood DAO: the treasury finances projects on the platform where token holders can easily vote on proposals from creators.

Product

We equip creators and filmmakers with smart contracts that allow them to push the frontiers of the next Hollywood even further. We help anyone who creates film or TV series worldwide to take advantage of the latest technological innovations. They own their story, they own their destiny, and no one comes between them and their fans and community. For creators, they can easily implement the latest technology and unlock the benefits of truly digital NFT blockchain tokens. When they create a project, they create unique tokens that allow any fan to buy a collectible that helps them finance their film or tv project. Creators get total control and insights over the primary & secondary market. Smart distributions are all written into the blockchain and distributed according to the smart contracts.

Revenue/Go-to-market

Optimized Primary Sale — Sell Collectibles Directly to Fans to help create a show, film, or animation and bring it to life. We take a transaction fee for providing the platform.

Secondary Market Revenue — As fans trade collectibles to other fans, creators receive a small fee, helping them bring even more art to life. We also share this secondary fee.

Tokens Become Digital Collectibles — Now instead of a t-shirt or early digital access, fans get better rewards for being early supporters.

Reward True Fans — building a community, and legion of true fans.

Smart distributions — In Traditional Hollywood getting paid what you’re owed takes months — using digital collectibles on the blockchain — could take minutes.

Long Term

Next Hollywood’s long-term defensibility will come from allowing people to make money from their entertainment instead of paying for it (subscriptions, TV bundles, etc.). Both sides of the marketplace are incentivized to use this platform, creating network effects that will spark a renaissance in Hollywood. Art will be just as lucrative as software.

NFTs is one of the fastest-growing, reaching $3bn+ sales in August with over 200k participants. This is the fastest growth area for token applications as total sales for 1H/2021 were $2.5bn, up from only $14mn in 1H/2020.

Eventually, the $100B+ opportunity would be a decentralized Netflix competitor, where top filmmakers and IP creators raise millions to finance fan-selected films or games without needing large studio financing, earnings are driven by token sales in the primary and secondary market.

Team

The people best suited to bring this next Holywood era into existence are those who understand both a) building product-led software teams and b) the nuance of “Big Hollywood” filmmaking, storytelling, and producing.

There are not many at the intersection of technology and liberal arts, art and science, web3, and Hollywood. This team does:

Our 3 Mandates

To address these challenges, Hollywood DAO allows greater access for creators and filmmakers, improving diversity, equity, and conclusion among its members. In addition, Hollywood DAO helps remove the bias in Hollywood by focusing on community-backed film and content decisions.

The 3 mandates are:

1 ACCESS: Expanding the inclusion of Hollywood in a way that any great film or TV creator can seek resources from Hollywood DAO, regardless of background or access via traditional Hollywood grounds.

2 INNOVATION: Increasing innovation in TV, Film, and Games by allowing creators to have autonomous access and creative control over their own intellectual property. Web3 is going to allow creators to be curators offering certain rights to their IP to new creators to build on for collective benefit: a curated complex adaptive system, like a series of legos, where creators can let others expand on their IP.

3 SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEM: Increasing overall revenue in the blockchain ecosystem by backing film, TV, and game projects that increase value and fun in the world, and in doing so return a greater reward to the DAO as well. As the value of IP of projects backed increases — and even have returns — it creates a sustainable DAO ecosystem.

Milestones

The following milestones are targeted in the 1st year after launch:

Q1

In the first month, we will launch and nurture our discord community and Design incentives, treasury, and governance for our DAO, while simultaneously beginning the development of the Next Hollywood platform.

In month 2, we will market and attract creators and filmmakers to the platform, by financing the DAO ecosystem. In month 3, we’ll release our MVP which allows for IP ownership and smart contract distributions. We’ll establish a governance structure, and begin voting on community-driven decisions.

Q2

In months 4-6, we’ll learn from MVP and develop V1, and start project campaigns w/ high-profile creators in Hollywood; branded as the next Golden Age of Hollywood. From there we commence the development of V2 features: an NFT generator as part of the app, discord style community feature, designs & iterations, and a public crowdsale / token sale to finance treasury with $5m for the DAO.

Q3

Community: Post-token-launch events, initiatives, and funding opportunities; aim for self-sustaining community. Use treasury to back several HollywoodDAO-funded TV and film projects. Platform: continue scaling platform, begin producing films and TV series, establish an internal studio, begin dev of an NH library of content.

Q4

The synergy between DAO, community, platform, and studio creates a Netflix/Kickstarter competitor by Focusing on changing Hollywood culture by the scale and the sheer volume of projects financed and launched via Hollywood DAO. We’ll expand and focus on bringing our technology to gaming through partnerships or an in-house game studio. And finally, we’ll facilitate the entire movie-making process (production, talent, marketing, launch) for our creators.

Currently, our team is building out HollywoodDAO, within which lies the Next Hollywood (NH) funding platform. We hired developers who are using Harmony’s blockchain to create NH and are laying the foundation of the DAO’s community and tokenomics (we are a Harmony $50k grant recipient). Additionally, we have outsourced UI/UX and marketing, which is also in the beginning stages of designing our software and branding. Everything should be completed and publicly launched within the next six weeks.

We are hoping to raise $750,000 to allocate as follows:

$500,000 to go to HollywoodDAO’s treasury and $250,000 to go to Next Hollywood’s development. For NH, we need to pay our developers, designers, marketers, and the founding team for past work and this upcoming year. This includes up to $175,000 budgeted for part-time and full-time employees, $50,000 for our marketing spend, and $25,000 towards the general operations of the company. For HollywoodDAO, we plan on allocating the 500,000 towards a liquidity pool for our token ($100,000), paying employees ($100,000), funding operational costs ($50,000), and most importantly, beginning film projects for NH users ($250,000).

$750,000

Metrics for success

We currently do not have users, as our platform is under development, but are aiming to capture 1% of Netflix’s current user base (2,070,000 users) by 2023, 10% by 2024, and 50% by 2026. Additionally, we aim for the DAO to have a treasury of greater than $7bn in the next 5-10 years, so that we can create a major Hollywood studio. In terms of our own film production, our goal is to fund around 5-10 major motion pictures a year.

For the first 6 months, as we build the platform and increase the treasury an increasing amount of funds will go directly towards backing film & TV projects once the platform is built and deployed, and fully functional (50% of all DAO funds).

With the initial $750,000 in funding, in the first month we will launch and nurture our discord community and design incentives, treasury, and governance for our DAO, while simultaneously beginning development of the Next Hollywood platform.

In month 2, we will market and attract creators and filmmakers to the platform, by financing the DAO ecosystem. In month 3, we’ll release our MVP which allows for fractional ownership and smart contract distributions. We’ll establish a governance structure, and begin voting on community-driven decisions.

Really excited by this and to be working with the team on this. Truly believe as there are many successful block chains, there will be many successful Hollywood DAOs that finance films! And just as DAOs compete with VCs now in positive-sum games, soon DAOs will compete with hollywood studios too.

Truly believe Next Hollywood’s model/DAO will change the industry in allowing creators to bring their art to life!

I’m a writer-producer who’s been working in Hollywood for 20+ years and I’ve seen how the industry has changed for the better in some ways and has gotten worse in others. I’m involved in NextHollywood because I honestly think this is the future of the industry. From the bottom up, with fans supporting and financing projects that have the most merit. Eliminate the tastemakers/gatekeepers and let the people decide what they want! Not only does this make the industry more democratic, but vastly improves representation across the board. Good ideas win! No barriers to entry. Cass knows what he’s doing and he’s creating the future of Hollywood today. I believe in this wholeheartedly and that’s why I’m not just a creative partner but also an investor.

NextHollywood is the most exciting new development in independent film and television financing in years. The team is second to none and I’m thrilled to be able to witness and participate in the inception of this revolution!

One thing I think it’s especially important to highlight when it comes to NextHollywood’s potential: A pipeline to more diverse stories, perspectives, and creators. We’ve seen Hollywood portray new faces, stories, and cultures on screen — but at a snail’s pace, and usually only when there’s already a proven market through other channels. Instead of an industry playing catchup, this could be a more direct, faster mechanism for diversity in storytelling, one that more accurately reflects what’s resonating with consumers in the here-and-now.

NextHollywood will change the landscape of the motion picture industry as we know it. I can’t wait for more equity, more diversity, and stories to be told that people want to hear and see. Informed art with not just a pulse on the general populous, but the general populous as the heartbeat of creation is right around the corner.

Fantastic proposal Hollywood Team! I particularly like the emphasis on IP holders maintaining full rights of use and therefore can receive more revenue from commercialisation. As a creative working with large media corporations I know first hand how difficult it can be to balance the integrity of the artistic vision and what the other stakeholders require. With a decentralised media industry we can start to transfer equity and create real value for everyone. I fully support this proposal and look forward to #HERDAO working with you all

Extremely excited about the vision of this proposal. HollywoodDAO is the future of the industry. The team is experienced and has the network of fantastic individuals to take this project to the next level. Looking forward to the progress of this proposal!

Super interesting, was waiting for someone to equip creators with smart contracts. From my work with Hollywood companies, they still operate a very old school and don’t offer fans many options to own any parts of their work. Love those creators will get total control over the primary and secondary market.

Dave is becoming an incredible founder and I fully believe this will be the web3 version of Netflix - instead of users paying to subscribe to be entertained, they will be paid to be entertained. Flips the entire model on it’s head - i love it. LFG.

Over the years in helping content creators (Film/TV/Digital), particularly the indie community, I see the biggest pain points for them are having access to funds in order produce their projects, being able to connect directly with fan communities (NFTs), and maintaining some sort of downstream control to their projects (smart contracts).

HOLLYWOODDAO is what will help creators get their diverse stories told and for fans to have a direct line with them (and vice versa).
