Building a SAFE space for ALL - Me2 Proposal for Project Y

Name: Me2DAO

Application type: DAO Formation

Proposal overview

Me2DAO is a 100% social driven DAO focused on building a SAFE SPACE for ALL women, trans, non-binary and allies. Our goal is to set the tone as we fastly grow as a community to guarantee that we start on the right path. To achieve inclusiveness as we expand and diversify the Web3 space, compliance measures and risk management assets have a strong role play to all stakeholders. Education and prevention against sexual misconduct incidents are key assets and we should be prepared for the future of our ecosystems! The health, safety and well-being of our community are paramount to our success and Me2DAO is committed to providing the blockchain ecosystem with an inspiring, safe and healthy environment.

Problem(s) to be solved

Amazing initiatives like H.E.R. DAO, CryptoMujeres, Blu3DAO and so many others are changing the scenery on diversity and inclusion in the Web3 space. Despite all the effort on bringing and funding women, the blockchain ecosystem still lacks diversity. Harrassment and discrimination are factors that contribute to this diagnosis.

Population-level surveys based on reports from survivors provide the most accurate estimates of the prevalence of intimate partner violence and sexual violence. A 2018 analysis of prevalence data from 2000-2018 across 161 countries and areas, conducted by WHO on behalf of the UN Interagency working group on violence against women, found that worldwide, nearly 1 in 3, or 30%, of women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or non-partner sexual violence or both.

Violence – in all its forms – can have an impact on a woman’s well-being throughout the rest of her life. But violence against women is preventable! The Web3 space has an important role to play to provide a safe and healthy space for all and set the example.

Who is building Me2DAO?

Me2DAO is an initiative from MeToo Brasil, as a way to continue on its empowerment mission through Web3. Founded by attorney and social activist Marina Ganzarolli, MeToo Brasil provides real time support to ALL and ANY victims of sexual abuse. It’s an independent, non-profit and autonomous social impact hub inspired and influenced by the #MeToo movement founded by Tarana J. Burke in the United States. We will use our network of over 10k volunteers and expertise to build a safe community across all Web3 ecosystem from the very start!

Me2DAO Vision

In the long term, we seek to build asset opportunities that generate sustainability to Me2DAO change driven community work. We aim to achieve transparency, efficiency and democracy to act lawfully, ethically, and with integrity. In the short term Me2DAO will have the hability to fund the creation and implementation of social impact projects to build a safe and healthy space for ALL in the Web3, carried out with MeToo Brasil expertise and #MeToo worldwide partnerships. We believe that each of these core values are equally important to our mission, and we strive to promote these values throughout our activities.

More about MeToo Brasil

MeTooBrasil core mission is to amplify sexual violence survivors’ voices, to give visibility to silenced stories of sexual abuse and to provide multidisciplinary support to these girls and women to know that they are not alone.

it’s not only a movement against sexual harrasment and sexual abuse. We tackle sexual violence with action: (1) protecting and supporting victims, by helping them to became survivors, and (2) shifting the public mindset about the stigma surrounding these crimes.

During COVID19 Brazil saw the rates of gender-based violence [raise 36%] (Me2DAO external links - Google Docs). Women and children were isolated and had no access to the usual help public resources. But approximately 98% of smartphone owners in the country have WhatsApp installed on their mobile devices.

To solve this problem, MeTooBrasil lauched a platform on 31th August 2020 to support victims, using web2 technology to reach out to women seeking help. An online form is filled by the victim or a friend and a team sets up an instant message group to coordinate a multidisciplinary response.

Translation of image: “how can we help you?”: “I suffered abuse, want to report it and need support”; “I want to report for a third person”; “I just want to share my story”]

Within its very first year of operation MeTooBrasil plataform already supported 74 victims and sexual violence trhought this channel, providing them free legal, social and pscicological aid. That number is higher than an average Sao Paulo capital police station receives, which means we are being successful in building a safe community for survivors to seek help.

One of the major obstacles on tackling sexual violence is subnotification. A victim could take years to talk about their trauma, or even never talk about it. Of the 74 victims that MeTooBrasil supported, 48% were asking for help for the first time. That shows us we are on the right path, by really helping survivors to break the silence for the first time.

Other quality metrics show that the reports are similar to Brazil’s statistcs on sexual violence: it happens at home, from a close family member or friend, during an early age. From the victims that seek MeTooBrazil help, 52% suffered violence at home, in 29% of the cases the aggressor was the current or ex-partner, 10 victims lived with the aggressor, and 21% of the aggressors possess or have access to firearms. Another alarming fact is that 57% described sexual abuse against children and teenagers by a male family member.

On the other hand, there are victims who wish only to share their story, and received 77 stories of sexual violence suffered by anonymous victims.

In only 1 year, MeeToo Brasil organically reached 13.6k followers on and was mentioned countless times in big vehicles of the national press, such as, Folha de São Paulo (Brazilian daily newspaper founded in 1921) and UOL (Brazilian online service provider established in 1996).

Love every bit of this! Once available I would love some readings or a meeting to figure out the best practices for helping keep a community safe for all and non-toxic. Harmony overall is fairly decent at having an accepting community, but any pointers from the DAO to keeping a community from turning toxic during growth would be icing on the cake!
