Proposal overview

Scarlet DAO is an independent collective of students and alumni coming together to accelerate education and adoption of web3 primitives at Rutgers University. Our goal is to ultimately break the blockchain resource barrier and create an entirely self-sustaining web3 university community where students can explore interests with high value and resources. Education is better when it’s self-directed — emphasizing a sense of ownership over curricula and freedom to pursue one’s own interests. We want to bring together alumni and students involved with blockchain on their campuses while enabling cross-university collaboration. At present, the DAO is composed of 9 Rutgers students from various backgrounds in engineering, business, and the arts. Our founding stewards are crypto-native and we share diverse experiences and expertise. All of us hold a desire to share the benefits of web3 with the student body.

Problem to be solved and Why ScarletDAO

Everyone is dissatisfied in one way or another with the American education system.

  • Paying exorbitant amounts of money in taxes for high schools or tuition and dorm fees for colleges

  • Receiving degrees that have no job prospects

    • Some fault lies in the job market, which students enter and face low incomes and poor benefits after 4 years in some fields.
    • Not everyone can or should become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer.
  • How successful are colleges at achieving or exceptionally providing Kassen Qian’s 7 Points? (credentials, social life, path towards professional success, education)? My bet is not very.

    • The Ivys are the most exceptional, but are incredibly hard to get into, expensive
    • Ultimately, most of us spend 4-5 years at university, but fail to get an education later on in life; college is not a lifetime membership. Undeniable that the central freedom DAOs provide us is the ability to re-imagine incentive structures within a university context.
  • “Universities are very top-down, whereas DAOs are very bottom-up.” – Kassen Qian

  • We can now undertake a holistic and democratic reimagining of the college experience.

    • We can ask the questions – what is a college? What could a college be? what matters to students? What matters to alums? What matters to faculty? And work quickly towards building an incentive system with tokens and NFTs.
    • And work slowly to build stronger communities backed by more than vibes and social capital, to create or change the systems to our desires.

Some of the benefits of a Collegiate DAO

  • student DAOs will establish educational programs for college students who are interested in Web 3 technology. Currently, we face a dilemma where many individuals do not comprehend the structure or importance of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and DAOs.

  • Second, student DAOs are financial vehicles that can help fund startup projects and entrepreneurial ventures amongst ambitious college students.

  • Finally, DAOs can utilize their capital to help contribute funding towards social causes and community involvement. Amongst college towns there are a plethora of issues taking place such as homeless, food insecurity, lack of foundational necessities - clothes, blankets, toothbrushes, etc.

OVERALL Benefits…

  • Provide students unparalleled agency to pursue their interests.

  • A student-run organization that operates on equal footing with companies and corporations. As partners instead of sponsors

    • Validates the work of students instead of condescending it with “intern” titling
  • Opportunity to pursue practices that are not profitable, not resume-building, but are enriching with grants

    • Conferences, Meetups, Discussion Round Tables, Research Grants
  • Work at the DAO full-time out of college

    • Imagine being able to work at cooperatives, keeping wealth within the student body instead of putting it in the hands of multinational corporations?
    • Imagine earning money through dividends?
    • Imagine more stable jobs by working at DAO-owned businesses?
    • Imagine earning dividends on profits each year due to membership?

Implementation

  • We will accomplish this by producing thought leadership content, fostering community, and providing novel services to our members.
    • CONTENT

      • Producing educational content and thought leadership on various web3 concepts and technologies. For the entire blockchain community.
      • Teaching courses on campus and hosting regular events of various sizes (discussions, speaker events, and conferences)
    • COMMUNITY

      • Holding biweekly meetups to discuss web3 with like-minded individuals
      • Voting on proposals as a delegate to DAOs, such as Uniswap, Compound, and Gitcoin.
      • Partnering with companies to provide educational discounts to students for web3 products and services
      • Partnering with Delphi Digital to get Pro memberships for our community (Completed)
      • Establishing a $SCARLET membership token to token-gate access, decentralize voting, fund our treasury, and expand operations
    • PROJECTS

      • Partnering with Syndicate to create guided investment clubs to help Rutgers students make strong investment decisions together in an educated environment
      • Providing grants and investment in Rutgers startups focused on distributed ledger technology (blockchains, cryptocurrencies, DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, etc.).
      • Launch a NFT consultancy to advise and enable businesses to build NFT projects. We help businesses mint NFTs, learn about NFTs, get advisory for campaigns. Will provide a steady income for the DAO
    • As we are foregoing university support, we require outside capital from alumni and supporters to help us fund our vision.

    • CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION

      • Giving students the opportunity to attend conferences stands as one of the biggest educational opportunities to immerse themselves into the ecosystem by participating in hackathons, expanding their network, learning from speakers. In addition, Scarlet DAO’s presence at conferences is fundamental for university representation, new investor relations or cooperation partners, as well as growing social relationships, which are invaluable for everything from emotional support to future opportunities. Scarlet DAO plans to work with Harmony to deliver scholarships for the conference attendance program.

Vision

  • Onboard more Rutgers students into web3 through in person activities

  • Create a powerful social media hub filled with strong educational content

  • Student Participation at Conferences and eventually create a scarletDAO representation at these conferences for spread educational opportunities, attract potential recruiters, etc.

  • Get students to serve internships in the blockchain space or launch projects on their own.

  • Create liquidity pool for $SCARLET

    • Launch $SCARLET publicly
  • Create a Treasury to run a ScarletDAO product incubator

    • Launch a consultancy
    • launch our own product
    • fund projects that Rutgers students want to pursue
  • Create a proper Gamified blockchain/crypto education platform that any student can take and idelaly get rewarded with school credit

  • Create a NFT platform for social impact

  • participate in governance & proposals

    • delegation at larger daos
  • Launch scarletDAO product (revenues) — btw what do you think about launching a product at scarlet dao and distributing profits to $scarlet holders (like hoodies or something, or just quarterly NFTs) — i like the idea of moving into defi just a tad bit

  • guided investment clubs (w/ syndicate)

    • Buying equity from startups
  • Buy a property to host meetups, serve as a hacker house, and a co-working space.

  • Eventually create a university blockchain conference that is specifically tailored to onboarding students onto web3.

  • Create UniversityDAO - All university DAOs under one branch and create an easy structure for any other university to adopt and create their own DAO

    • Eventually partner with other university DAOs to enable a cross-university collaborative environment.

Progress so far…

ScarletDAO’s onboarding has brought together 8 students who are well immersed in the blockchain field and have created our manifesto, website, hosted a meetup, launched a $SCARLET token, a Gnosis safe, got onboarded to SyndicateDAO to lead our syndicate, secured $220k in Delphi Digital Pro subscriptions for our members through our connection with the Delphi Digital COO, we raised .25eth from our announcement post on mirror (not intended to be a fundraise, just an announcement). Post our public announcement we are working on various partnerships to accelerate opportunities for our members and newcomers to the blockchain space at Rutgers.

Funding Proposal: ‘The Ask’
