Harmony Latam DAO

LatamDAO

Overview

Latin America is a vast territory full of opportunities and needs where blockchain and web3 can provide solutions that make a real difference in people’s lives. The instruments offered by blockchain, which in other countries are a luxury (commodity), in Latin America are a necessity to protect themselves from political drifts and inflationary practices in their economies.

Latin Americans have a strong sense of community, they tend to live focused on creating wealth and safeguarding their savings to be able to face a changing environment and with few tools to face unforeseen events (health expenses, unforeseen housing expenses, etc.). With a population that exceeds 660 million inhabitants, barely more than half are in the banking system.

Due to these particular circumstances, Latin America offers enormous opportunities for adoption and growth for the blockchain and is one of the territories on the planet with the greatest need for a change towards a radically fair economy. And that is the mission of LatamDAO, to bring our latinamerican brothers and sisters to our ecosystem, offer them ways to build wealth, scout new developers and builders to web3 and incentivize the decentralization via DAOs to reach transparency, efficiency and democracy as a new paradigm to productivity.

Our mandate

Education:

We are going to focus our educational efforts on three main environments:

-Builders/Developers

Recruitment of developers and builders to create and release Web3 products and bring people from Web2 to web3. Our work in the communities of the region will seek synergy with other projects in our ecosystem, such as the ZKU.

-DAO

We are going to promote the adoption of DAOs as a new productive paradigm didactically, highlighting the regional roots in autonomous organizations, but evangelizing about the opportunities presented by DAOs in the culture of transparency, efficiency and decentralization.

-Validators

We are going to promote the creation and launching of validators nodes in the region via events, workshops and small events as TGI oriented to validators.

Growth Through Engagement:

All LatamDAO actions will encourage not only the growth but also the strengthening of our community.

As a continental organization we are going to promote the formation of regional DAOs in Latin American countries as well as mentor different communities and teams that are being formed in the region. Through different channels we will keep the community informed and engaged and we will be a bridge between the different initiatives and products of Harmony to expand the participation of Latin Americans and promote the sense of belonging of our community.

Diversity

We are committed to the faithful representation of the Latin American community in the DAO. For this reason, we reinforce gender parity in the team and our actions will be focused on balancing the presence of voices that are traditionally outside the Blockchain environment.

Also, in a proper sense of Latin America, we include and keep our focus in the Caribbean and Brasil, with no language barrier but a borderless sense of community that shares roots, history and struggles.

Schedule of activities for the first three (3) mandates of the DAO:

Q1:

-Development of Smart Contracts and for the constitution of LatamDAO.

-Host two (2) Meetings in a University in Venezuela with a capacity of approximately 50 people each, aimed to Web2 developers.

-Host a Hackathon in Venezuela – with the support of a reputed local institution as a top university in the country.

-Host three TGI meet ups in Venezuela and another country in the region.

-Scout and start sponsorship agreements with at least 6 hackathons for 2022 in different cities in Latin America (focused in the Caribbean, Central America, South of the continent and The Andes region).

-Help and mentor the launching of Brazil DAO, Caribbean DAO, Colombian DAO, México DAO, and Venezuela DAO.

-Launch Telegram, Twitter, Discord, Instagram, etc. accounts. With the purpose of reaching a large community and building engagement.

-Creating swag to be distributed within the attendees of our events.

-Deciding and starting the work for the host of the forthcoming events in other countries in Latam for the next mandates.

Note: Venezuela is the country with most adoption of blockchain in the region, that is why we are going to start developing events in that country. After the first mandate, Venezuela DAO should take the work in the country with our support.

So excited to be a part of this movement to promote the utility of blockchain throughout LATAM to give our communities levels of protection, wealth and safety nets unlike we’ve ever seen before.

I wanted to start by saying that there is clearly a lot of value in exposing LATAM to Harmony ONE! and thank you for building this proposal!

The budget for this seems pretty large and a lot of it is directed at funding Travel/Swag/marketing and outreach, which may be intentional but I was curious if there was anything your team had in mind to create a sustainable business model beyond the initial DAO funding?
Would the DAO dissolve after this initial funding runs dry if there wasn’t another round of funding?

If there wasn’t a plan for creating a long term income model for the DAO, perhaps some of the Travel/Swag budget could be directed at attempting to determine a fund raising model for your DAO longer term.

There was also a large portion of your budget that was directed at paying governors for the work they put in, is there any plan for how those payments will have a level of oversight?

Either using Coordinape or Clockify to track and justify everyone’s hours?

THANK YOU and GOOD LUCK with your Proposal!

Hello Edd. First of all, I want to thank you for your constructive comment…

The budget was meticulously forecasted keeping in mind that the DAO activities will cover the whole continent, travel expenses cover the presence of the DAO in big events, such as international conferences where we serve as a bridge for Latin Americans to the ecosystem. Regarding to the swag, Latin America is an extremely low income area where this kind of material is highly valued, in fact swag giveaway is a very common marketing strategy used in the region. The number of kits is mainly based on the number of the assistants to our events.

One of our main objetives for the Q2 is to install a validator node to collaborate with the DAO.

We are aiming for a permanent DAO for the region. This is an education-promotion based DAO, such as other successfully stablished regional DAOs.

Related to the governors payments, we are going to pay 35$ per hour of calls and meetings where we discuss our activities, considering we are reducing the call hours to 35$, which is less of the half of the regular hour payment. Anything else (administration, marketing, community, project management, etc.) will be 75$/hour. We are still deciding which method we are going to use to track the hours of work. Fortunately, inside the team we have some governors that are active members of other important DAO’s and they share with us their experience.

In the name of the team, thank you for your consideration and good wishes. We look forward to keep the community informed in our advancements through the channels. :grinning:

Thanks guys for putting this together. Thanks a lot José, for the long telegram discussions we have had on DAOs. From the Africa DAO, we are eager to collaborate with you to explore key points related to sustainability, reputational tokens, elections, community participation, payment systems, social impact, etc.

I really like the idea of establishing a validator node to collaborate with the DAO.

Forward!

Hello, my friends! :blue_heart:

Thank you so much for this proposal. My time in Mexico City for @TheDAOist event was inspired. LATAM is clearly hungry for more Web3 and blockchain exposure. And Harmony is primed for it.

I would love to bring in a couple key figures in the Harmony LATAM and Spanish-speaking community and get their feedback!

@rosajc @Abraham @Boris_Polania @pjconleyy @SpanishDAO and please tag more.

I think my biggest question is. . .How, or why, does this differ from our Regional DAO’s? And to that point, if the LATAM DAO plans on going from LATAM country to country hoping to spin up Regional DAO’s (which, personally, I believe is an awesome idea), then I would love to loop in the Ambassador DAO. @ElixirofLife @dpagan-harmony

Very excited to hear some responses, ideas, and feedback. :blue_heart:

Hi Mikey!

Thank you for your feedback and for supporting our project.

The main idea of LatamDAO is to offer a general guideline to those who want to establish regional DAOs, in order to create homogeneity and avoid redundancy in many aspects, which translates into saving time and money for everyone.

For the establishment of regional DAO’s LatamDAO will offer help in methodology, unification of image and logos, reuse of Smart Contracts, guide for the structuring of governance and guidelines for the organization of events, among others. The idea is to create a tangible guide so that we can establish all our DAOs efficiently and in less time.

We have noticed from the experience we have had so far, that much of the time that is lost when putting together a DAO goes into these details that I mentioned above, and that at the end of the day this translates into a loss of motivation and hours of work. In addition to this, let’s add the waste of time in making decisions that does not help the development of DAOs either.

I understand that we are decentralized and autonomous organizations, but we must take into account that we are educational institutions within an ecosystem, and we serve as a base and as an example for future projects and participants. Therefore, we must have a coherent general guideline for all our regional DAOs, and we must coherently transmit harmony’s values as well.

In conclusion, the vision of LatamDAO is to unify and accelerate the growth of this great family in a homogeneous, fast and simple way for all its participants; in addition to the objectives mentioned in the budget presented in the proposal.

Congratulations on the proposal, definitely the opportunities for expansion and use of Blockchain in Latin America are incredible!

I believe that the regional DAO format is the most important thing in a region with as much cultural diversity as Latin America, literally each country is a world. Still a general organization that helps to control and create these DAO more quickly may be a good idea.

As has been mentioned, I would recommend prioritize more the events and expansion of the DAO in the first phase, since only with salaries, trips and contingency more than 50% of the budget of the DAO goes away, and what really generates an impact are the meetups and the hackathon that only have 2 small meetups and 1 hackathon.

Although it is obvious that the promoters has to be rewarded for their work, I recommend dedicating the initial efforts to generating a great impact and allocating at least 2/3 of the budget to the expansion of the DAO and once validated, more funding can always be requested to maintain the activities if required. Also the DAO “Smart Contract” is a multisig that is literally generated in less than 5 minutes from https://multisig.harmony.one/, I have never seen anyone asking funding for that.

Good luck with the proposal, I would really like to see it working!

I have been lucky enough to interact with most (if not all) of the members of LatamDAO, many of them I know in real live, and a few of them I have known for a little longer. I can say that I haven’t seen a group of people more committed to the idea of bringing Latin America Web3’s main stage.

When I joined Harmony, I committed to the idea of expanding hispanic diversity inside the core team, the fellows and contributors. Not only because–as a Latino myself–I want to see more Latino’s in the ecosystem, but because I strongly believe in the great potential of the region in raising adoption, providing top-level talent, and giving a full new perspective to the web3 and crypto in general. So am I really please to see that a DAO for Latin America is lead by such a group of notable degens. All of them with strong ties to the region, speaking our languages and proud to be part of our regions. This is a good day for the Harmony Community in Latin America. It’s Day One.

I would like to conditionally approve this proposal for a bootstrap grant of $75K. I would also like to echo @Boris_Polania’s sentiments above. My time in Mexico City for the DAO’ist event was filled with inspiration and connections.

This approval is conditional because I would like to pick the brains of the current DAO members very quickly.

Is it simpler to combine these two functions? And, I think it would be interesting for this Supra-Regional DAO to establish 25 harmony-city chapters around LATAM. Not 'Regional DAO’s, more like DAO embassies. Is that something that sounds interesting?

Personally, I do not see a Supra-Regional being a ‘boss’ of Regional DAO’s. More-like a separate avenue for building community awareness and expanding the Harmony brand.

Again, this proposal is conditionally approved. Would love to hear thoughts on the ‘DAO embassies’.

Hi Mikey.
Thank you for your attention!

These events have a different nature. The main events (50 people each) have an educational purpose and these will be held in one of the auditoriums of the Metropolitan University of Caracas (one of the most prestigious universities in the country) with the presence of a senior developer. In the other hand, the hangouts will be carried out in a bar or restaurant with the intention of connecting people whether they are developers or entrepreneurs.

Ok, there’s a misinterpretation here. Our proposal doesn’t mention the word “Boss”, we would never intend to do so. We don’t have intentions to control/dictate or interfere in the form, operations or decisions of any of the regional DAOs. Our only intention is to offer guidance to those who ask for it (will these be projects or DAOs), with the only purpose of spreading Harmony’s guidelines and values in our languages. Putting together a DAO or asking for a grant could be easier if you have a guidance, specially when there’s a language barrier/lack of resources… Latinamerica has an enormous adoption of crypto, starting with Venezuela which is the one with the most, but there is little that is known about blockchain and Web 3, yet there’s a growing interest in it.

I agree with you, but more than an avenue we should see it as a guidance tree, that starts with harmony core values, then LatamDAO, then Regional DAOs, and the Embassies as its final branches. In this way, each regional DAO can establish at least five embassies, which at the end of the day will triple (assuming 15 principal latinamerican coutries) the number of embassies you propose.

I think this would be an excellent idea for Regional DAO’s metrics.

If we want to create 10.000 DAOs worldwide (2022-2026) we need to start at least 6 DAOs per day, every day for this period. To do this, we need to accelerate with logic and coherency and the only way to do this is by having guidance and support.

Once again, thank you for your time.

I’m not sure if you or any of the other initial members of the LATAM DAO attended the most recent DAO All Hands call, but Harmony has paused funding until May 1st. This is due to a multitude of reasons, but rest assured Harmony is still excited to get this DAO off the ground.
