Proposal overview

German team calling! Let’s give a voice (and amplifier) to the German community in the Harmony ecosystem. Our proposal is to launch a German DAO. We want to grow and support the German userbase, expand Harmony’s footprint and message in Germany, and do it all with a lot of fun – Viel Spaß!

Our Goals

These are our key goals and objectives, as aligned to the Regional DAO mandate:

  1. Build and nurture a community and home “heimat” for our German users in the Harmony ecosystem
  2. Foster a supportive and enthusiastic community atmosphere, with values that are aligned to the mission and culture of the Harmony network
  3. Introduce Harmony to new users and new Cryptonauts, and enable them to explore web3.0, DeFi, NFT and the metaverse with Harmony as their entry point or gateway
  4. Evangelize Harmony to seasoned Cryptonauts and Techies, as the platform to build, transact and grow on, and welcoming a community of new world builders
  5. Create a German-focused platform, with engaging content, events, media and tools, to bridge the German community to the wider and global Harmony ecosystem

Hallo Benjamin @ben2k_Stakeridoo,

Danke für deine Antwort!
Hope you’re okay if I answer this in English, this way it’s a bit more inclusive for everyone in the forum to read.

We’re very happy to join the Harmony ecosystem, and would very much like to contribute to growing the community!

We first met the Harmony team last year in ethcc4 in Paris, it was really interesting to hear what was being built and the vision for the network. Since then, we’ve bought in, tried running a validator (but of course, we were not a professional like you, a validator DAO governor!), but been mostly passive supporters… until now!

Now with the DAO opportunity, I think this is a really good chance for us to contribute to Harmony and help build the world we want to live in.

I think we put together a really good proposal of how we can deliver the Ask.
It took us a while, but we managed to recruit a super team with diverse backgrounds, genders, ages, fashion sense and the necessary skills and networks to help build the foundations for the German DAO.

Our idea is to use the first governance term to deliver, make a positive impact, build trust
and use our network to expand the community in Harmony. With a lot of love, and fun! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I see you enjoyed my first post  and I understand your concern that I am a “newbie”, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? I think our team can definitely deliver on the translations, for example: last year we worked with ConsenSys to translate their Ethereum Developer Program (all teaching materials and videos) from English to German. We’re also good connected with Blockchance, which is one of the biggest blockchain conferences in Germany, so we have the network and skills (and will!) to run events, hackathons and source projects into the Harmony network.

Also we have a DAO mascot

We want to have this chance to show that we are capable and committed to Harmony!

As outlined in our proposal and timeline, we would open a community-wide Term 2 Governor election from Month 4 onwards. I also understand that you and @Antonio are in already contact off the forum, great!

I wish you a wonderful evening and am looking forward to building a new world together.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Adi

Hey Adi,

sure we can switch  So to understand DAO’s and the formation a bit better you can take an example on Russian DAO and @nickv which normal go over a vote on Snapshot. They have done an amazing job with their first meet-up!
Of course these are only recommendations from Harmony, like a 3 month elections term, but it is now especially during a formation where you could submit a candidacy to put up a proposal.
It’s not that I have concern about a “newbie” is more to keep it also open for everyone so everyone can apply for it :blue_heart: The only concern is that I don’t know anyone of you and you have only this one post up here, like from most other DAO’s those people have been active before on talk, telegram, twitter or discord.

The Network is around there to get connected and to get the knowledge to spin up a Validator, we have 5 Validator’s in our German Telegram Group like @HeavensWail or @OneUnitedPower who are more then willing to help out.
Our Group has members from Switzerland and Austria and I’m kind of worried that you just want to cover Germany.

May you like to join tomorrow the Twitter space i’m holding about forming the German DAO? https://twitter.com/stakeridoo/status/1495369812846989314

after ETH Denver @frwrdslosh as our DAO Operation Manager can give a Feedback on this?

Hello Ben!

Hope it’s not so stormy where you are in Zürich, because it’s some crazy hurricane here in Düsseldorf :tornado: :tornado: :tornado:

Thanks for your message and good points!

You are right, the proposal is focused mainly on Germany, hence German DAO.

We wanted to avoid grouping large regional groups together and forcing them into a single language DAO, because of the nature of the regional DAO requirements, e.g. host meetups, regional hackathons, sourcing projects.

From a logistics perspective, it is difficult for the community members to attend events that are far away, which means that most members or interested newcomers who attend will end up from the area where the event is held. Now imagine if we have a DAO that spans 3-4 countries, and the meetup is only in one country (or even more complex… if you have a DAO that spans continents… even if it’s the same language group).

Your post made me think a lot about the following idea:

  • Why not form a :switzerland: Swiss DAO and an :austria: Austria DAO?
  • :switzerland: Switzerland is a great region for blockchain, e.g. Zürich is great, and there’s also the Zug Crypto Valley! There’s plenty of hackathons to partner with, and we can source great projects there into the Harmony Ecosystem
  • :austria: Austria is the same, it’s got a lot of cool blockchain startups and hackers, much friendlier regulators on crypto and blockchain, and a cool web3.0 scene

Now if we zoom out and look at the bigger picture and overall benefit for the wider Harmony ecosystem → having 3 regional DAOs will bring at least:

  • 3x5 (=15) granted projects into Harmony,
  • 3x1 (=3) hackathon partnerships
  • 3x2 (=6) meetups

That will grow Harmony a lot more! Also, each regional DAO can cater to the specific needs of their community. For example, in Switzerland you guys have 4 official languages: French, German, Italian and Romansh. Instead of having open.harmony.one just in Deutsch, we could have it in Italiano and Romansh too, wouldn’t that be cool?

I’m all for working together. For the German translation, we could work together across the 3 regional DAOs to translate into German if you’re up for it, and to also update and translate new posts.

I think in the spirit of Harmony, cross-chain and bridges, it would be great to bridge between the DAOs and cooperate on areas that are synergistic (e.g. translations) and focus on areas that need more specialised attention (e.g. meetups). This way we can be diverse and collaborative.

Hi Adi,

Thank you for your proposal and the passion and energy you and your team have put into that.

As @ben2k_Stakeridoo already stated, you and your team members haven’t interacted with the existing German-speaking community so far.

I would strongly suggest you and your team join the existing community so we can get to know each other and form this DAO together, as a team of German-speaking people.

I suppose this comparison is misleading here.

Good morning @HeavensWail,

Thanks for your reply. Apologies for that comment, I will remove it.

Hope that you don’t misunderstand me :pensive:. The idea about having regional Swiss and Austrian DAOs was only a brainstorm in the chat.

If the community in the end would actually prefer a German-speaking DAO that covers all countries, then that’s also cool. Maybe logistics might be a challenge, but I’m sure we can work together to figure it out. I was just thinking about the other DAOs and some of their challenges, for example Spanish DAO – as a language, it would cover Spain and of course Latin America, and running events could be difficult across continents (but of course not impossible!!). But this was just a thought and brainstorm, so am glad to get your feedback.

We have some good ideas and some good energy, and we want to use it to contribute to Harmony. I like that it’s a free and open community, where everyone can share their ideas and get feedback, and maybe build something together. I know we are newbies, but hope the ideas we contribute can make good topics for discussion and some positive outcomes out of it.

Best wishes,
Adi

Hi Adi

It seem like you’re very organised and that you have a well grounded plan in place. Just for some constructive feedback though.

I have already had people reach out to me to point out the comments that you mentioned. And I have to agree with these people, that making Hitler/Nazi comments/jokes on a DAO proposal I believe is a little inappropriate.

I have a few German friends that have to live with the stigma of association to the wrong doings of Hitler and the Nazi party. I still have a grandma alive today that lived through the blitz and the Battle of Britain as a child as Hitler decimated the U.K through intense and relentless bombing raids and the majority or her older relatives had died fighting on the front lines. It’s of my understanding that through your German education you would have been taught about the seriousness of the atrocities of the Holocaust, and the close to 80 million people that lost their lives through WW2.

I understand that you were not showing support of what happened all those years ago, and this was a single sentence but you must understand that this is still an extremely touchy subject still to this day for many Germans and people throughout Europe, and it’s probably best not to make jokes about this, and probably best not to joke about this on a DAO proposal, and probably best not to joke about this on a German DAO proposal at that.

Hopefully you get involved with the existing Harmony German community and get to know them. Maybe apologise directly to them as I understand most of these people in these groups have already passed comment about what has been said.

I wish you guys the best of luck and hopefully you can work on forming a DAO which includes some of the people that have been working for a while to make this happen.

From a community perspective and this is only my own opinions, it’s best to hold an open election for candidates so the community gets to decide who represents them and the DAO. This isn’t a necessity as far as I believe, but it shows people you already believe in governance and the choice of the community the DAO represents.

Love the graphics by the way. Kudos to the person that put them together, maybe ask them to sign up as a contributor for the Harmony Creative DAO to be notified about relevant bounties when they become available, they can sign up here: Contributor Registration Form

Kind regards

Hi Adi

Thank you for your proposal.

I don‘t want to go into the touchy comment that has been written, it‘s been discussed by Ben and Bricktop enough.

What I find strange is that you haven‘t interacted with the german speaking community of Harmony at all let alone tried to build one yourself before writing this proposal. @ben2k_Stakeridoo and I have started to build a german Harmony community for a few months now and as a swiss myself, a purely Swiss DAO seems counter-productive, as switzerland harbor 4 major languages and e.g. the french speaking part speaks limited german and vice versa. I personally would like to see a german speaking DAO due to these circumstances. In my opinion it doesn‘t make sense to compare this to a „spanish DAO“ which would include Spain and all other spanish speaking countries, since in Spain, everybody speaks Spanish, even in the north-western Parts, where people also speak galic.

Once the german speaking Harmony Community grows, we can still talk about splitting it up into swiss-german and austrian DAOs or create Sub-DAOs representing these regions.

To conclude, I don‘t feel good about this proposal due to the discussed reasons:

  • no interaction with already established german speaking community groups, let alone create one, to listen to the views and opinion of the members
  • special language circumstances in Switzerland
  • weird comparisons

However, I really like the visuals and I like the idea of creating a DAO, just content-wise its not worked out properly in my honest opinion.

Best wishes, Minato

Hi Bricktop,

I am truly very sorry, it wasn’t my intention to have the comment perceived like that, that was insensitive of me and I am very truly sorry.

I totally understand where you are coming from and I also have German and non-German friends whose families went through the war. My grandmother herself is half-German, and she went through the war and the atrocities. There are no winners in such events, but much suffering and pain. Please know that I was not making a joke with the comment, and it was not made light-hearted, so please do not misunderstand. This is a topic that is also sensitive to me, and I think we should all choose to work together so that we don’t sow seeds discord. Again, I am truly sorry for my comment, I should have thought harder that it would be taken differently than what I intended. So I am very sorry.

At the same time, I come with a lot of good spirit to build something in Harmony, and we excitedly put together a proposal for review and feedback from the community. It was a contribution that I hoped would be useful, and we were happy to take feedback and make changes. This is what I understood to be the spirit of this forum and the open discussion here.

But the feedback we got offline the forum, on Telegram, was actually harsh and unwelcoming. Right after our first post, we got accused offline of being money-grabbers, that we are in it for the money, and also other not so nice stuff. So that was quite disappointing to me.

Personally, I actually just quit my job last week because I realise that I really do want to build something meaningful in the web3.0 space, and that I truly believe in the idea that we should create the world we want to live in. So I decided to go all in. I’ve saved up enough money to cover myself for at least 18 months, so that I can focus on making a contribution in this space. For me, money is not the point. I want to do something meaningful. The last two years with Covid, and seeing family and friends impacted, including some that lost their lives, was one of the reasons why I felt that we don’t have as much time as we thought. So instead of being afraid and playing it safe doing Enterprise blockchain stuff (which i really think is the wrong way to go!), I would take the step and try to build something meaningful in web3.0. So being accused of being money-minded and a money-grabber and just in it for the money was really disappointing thing to hear. At the same time I still wanted to be positive despite this, and I wanted to brainstorm some solutions with you all in good spirit. To be honest, I feel bullied and attacked.

Really we just wanted to contribute something and offer ourselves and our efforts to the community. If this is not something that’s welcomed, then that’s okay, we can retract the proposal. It’s not my intention here to create any drama, only to offer some ideas and contribute to how Harmony can grow in Germany.

Best wishes,
Adi

Hi guys,

thank you for the feedback. Adi and I did it the graphics and visuals ourselves.

Just wanna say, I am really sorry to hear this all. I can understand that you build something that you want to protect. I reached out to Ben to be cooperative but just got aggressive responses back and that he dont want that a team to apply to his process.

I would like to have a moving fordward discussion of how we can build together a meaningful force to support Harmony in Germany. We tried to make a proposal in an open way, but looks like from the conversation with Ben and the feedback here, it wont work out.

Actually we already creating conferences and meetups, so we thought we could use our experience to bring Harmony to Germany and grow the network. May not with this spirit

Hi Adi

I can appreciate that for sure. I’m glad you acknowledge it’s a touchy subject and thank you for the apology, I didn’t so much need one myself, but I’m sure people will see this and appreciate it.

I think due to the fact that there is already a working group formulated from existing community members and people that have been in the community for some time trying to achieve the same goals it might be a tricky place to start which is why I suggested trying to work with them to try to formulate the DAO.

Usually, at least from my personal perspective, the Harmony community is very accepting and extremely happy when people want to come into the space and build, so I apologize if this wasn’t the same reception you received. The community has noticed in the past people making funding proposals from accounts that have never commented or interacted with the Talk.Harmony forum and for some it serves as a red flag. This is another reason why I believe it’s important to try and interact with the community in some way first, whether it’s a DAO, Defi project or NFT project ect as it builds trust with the people already active in the community which you certainly need the support of going forward.

Don’t be deterred, reach out and discuss with the community, be transparent and face their questions and if you stick around you can start building the relationships you need to succeed. Being involved with DAOs can seem very political sometimes as you have to keep an extremely large number of people happy, but it’s a fun challenge when you start moving.

Interact with the community, be open to questions or criticism, remain transparent, and consider being open to public voting right from the start and being at the whim of the public opinion. I’m on two core DAOs with Harmony, and with both of these, you cannot be a governor for the community unless they chose for you to be on a seat of a council. And every major decision goes through them first. That’s the beauty of DAOs. It truly gives the people what they want.

Kind regards
Bricktop

hey @adi ,

thanks for the proposal. the German regional DAO is definitely that we want to have in our open community.

let me highlight points that are highly important for us, when it comes to DAOs

when the decision on daos was made (regional daos included) we thought on open participation for everyone. that means we’re not looking for a way for centralising them (even if at the first steps it might look so) and want to start a (regional) dao with open participation, but not to move the way centralised team that takes over mandates or deliverables.

also, this is a good idea to unite people by language not a specific area, because the language is the asset to communicate within permissionless community. for instance we did the same for the russian-speaking dao and it works well, combining together people from different countries helped us to amplify our deliverables more than required, e.g. 10 grantees vs 5 meant as a deliverable.

that’s why starting the regional German DAO I would recommend you cooperate with the existing German community that we have already, move this initiate forward, post you candidacy together with other council volunteers (and members of your team) and let the german community to decide who should be in the first council.

for all this written above you have up to 6 weeks initial period which we recommend complete by following deliverables:

  • build a tiny telegram DAO community;
  • recruit 9+ governor candidates;
  • post DAO proposal;
  • revitalise regional section on forum;
  • set up a snapshot space and pass governors through voting ;

ps: i personally currently work on the guide for regional daos and heading to make it public soon (after team will get back form ethDenver to the work and we can approve that)

pps:
this is not an appropriate joke I guess

Hi @nickv,

Thank you for your message. I think having a regional DAO guide sounds like a good idea. I also agree about not making it centralised, but understand that the first step might be. That’s not the goal from us either. We just wanted to start off with the team and build the foundation for the term, then open up to the community to run it based on elections. I see your points about having a language-based DAO, I have some ideas I would like to contribute, but maybe I should write it in a different post.

Also, having the guidelines would be very helpful, and maybe would prevent situations like this. Thanks for your efforts.

I hope you read my post above. I hope you don’t misunderstand, it was never my intention to make jokes or make light of such things.

Hello @Bricktop_One, thank you for your kind reply. It’s actually the first nice message I received here, so thank you very much. I want to be positive and not be deterred from the bigger vision, nevertheless I feel quite sad at the moment. It’s difficult to have people associate me with something so abhorrent. I understand better now your point about the very political part of DAOs. I hope other newcomers will have a better experience in the future.

Best wishes,
Adi

from what i see “wanted” here means you now more likely to accept harmony dao concepts.

i think this is a great entry point for growing a tiny community and start executing initial period’s bullet points together with other german language folks

thanks

After that bad joke, I was a bit paralyzed. One of my grandfathers lost everything and was in captivity for a long time. My other grandfather had only half a head due to a grenade injury. That means the front was like dented.

Now back to the topic, I told Antonio you can submit your candidacy but instead he tells me that you will not follow my rules. However, as mentioned before, these are not my rules.
As for the accusation that I created a regional group without a mandate, yes that is how DAOs start based on ambition and participation. See the Harmony Reddit Channel.
I told him that I wish that you don’t practice tribalism and you connect with us and what do you do then? A “bad” joke here on Talk.
I ask you to inform yourself about the procedure as Nick explained it to you and also to read the values of Harmony and also the general rules about talk.harmony.one

Thank you and have a good time in Harmony

Hi all,

Hope you are well. From the feedback here, I gather that this proposal isn’t adding value to the community. So I think it makes sense that we withdraw it.

Hopefully in the future, we could work together in better circumstances. Until then, I wish you well and maybe see you at one of the meetups. Take care and stay healthy!

Best wishes,

Hm, I agree to Adi. Let’s revoke this. May it’s a bad track record on both sides. Besides of the wrong comment of Adi and she apologized - then they are two ways of treatment.

I think we just wanted to support and help. In any case this behaviour of the community is not as nice too… At least Adi apologized what I don’t see from you guys. It’s always easy to build a close group of validators and blame and bully. Guess that’s the culture then.

Good luck. Community in Germany is small - will keep a harmony behaviour in mind.
